It is early November, and as the days get shorter, the nights grow longer, and the water gets colder, the wetsuit season also rapidly moves into high gear.
With that said. us guys here at Surfside Sports, decided that we would give Matuse Wetsuits, an unbiased product review.
Surfside Sports just brought the line into our shop, and some of our guys are wearing the suits for the first time.
We decided to review the Matuse Wetsuits collection, by these categories:
- Comfort
- Flexibilty
- Warmth
- Functionality
- Price
Matuse Wetsuits Product Review
(Comfort)
Well some of our team riders who also happen to ride for Analog, wear Matuse Wetsuits, as Matuse Wetsuits manufactures the Analog team wetsuits.
We asked Analog and Surfside Sports team rider Jason Harris, what he has to say about how comfortable his Matuse Wetsuits are:
Surfside Sports: “Hey Jason, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions about Matuse Wetsuits, and get some real feedback about them, as we recently brought their suits into Surfside Sports.”
Jason: ” Ya guys, no worries, the Matuse Wetsuits fit really well, they feel like they really form to your body, and I never have any issues with rashes or anything like that. You can really sacrifice the thickness, like I rock a 2 millimeter and I am warm and comfortable” Over all I just think they’re killer suits! Ha ha”
Surfside Sports: “Yeah Jason, thanks for your time!”
Matuse Wetsuits Product Review
(Flexibility)
Next we ask Surfside Sports surf department manager Bret Meyers what he has to say about Matuse Wetsuits.
Surfside Sports: ” Yo Bret, so what is your take on the flexibility of Matuse Wetsuits? Jay Larson hooked you up with one, so give us some real feedback on the flexibility?
Bret Meyers: ” Ummm, ummm, I would have to say that as far as the “Geoprene” they use, is one of the softest and most flexible suits I have worn, so ya I am stoked on them definitely, and the more I wear it the more it forms to my body. I paddles against the current for like 3 hours that last swell we had, and I had no issues with the suit holding me back, or restricting me in any way”
Surfside Sports: “Thanks Bret, appreciate your feedback!”
Matuse Wetsuits Product Review
(Warmth)
So now we will get to the most important part of our Matuse Wetsuit Review……Warmth!
We will ask our team rider Victor Done, who just got a new Matuse suit, what he has to say about the warmth.
Surfside Sports: ” Hey Victor, you just got the hookup on a new Matuse Wetsuit, ya?”
Victor Done: ” Ya, Matuse Wetsuits are amazing! Unfortunately for my body type, I have minimal (Surface area to volume ratio), which makes me get cold quickly. Luckily, with Matuse Wetsuits innovative Hidden Chamber Technology (Geoprene with built-in air chambers) my body can stay warm because air heats up quicker than water. I would absolutely recommend these warm, long lasting wetsuits, to any surfer and/or waterman who doesn’t enjoy being cold.
Matuse Wetsuits Product Review
(Functionality)
So our next category in our Matuse Wetsuit product review is “Functionality”. We caught up with another Analog team rider and Surfside Sports team rider “Nick Fowler”.
Surfside Sports: “Ya Fowler, we are doing a little product review on the Matuse Wetsuit range and want to get some insight and feedback from you, in regards to overall functionality of the Matuse line.
Nick Fowler: “I have a chest zip, and it is way easier to paddle, and get in and out of the wetsuits VS. the back zip, I personally prefer chest zips, the Matuse suits are super warm and comfortable, compared to other brands (Who I won’t say)
. Also the one thing that I am stoked on is, how fast they dry, after I surf in the morning, and hang it out, it is completely dry for another go out, in like an hour. Also I like the plain black wetsuits, as I do not like bright wetsuits, so ya that is my take. Overall I think they are great wetsuits that are warm, flexible, and they last long, I have mine over a year and it is still keeping me warm, the only thing is after a year, I have had some problems with stitching, but totally minor”
Matuse Wetsuits Product Review
(Price)
Our last category as we wrap up our product review on Matuse Wetsuits, is a real important category, and it is “Price”.
We decided to ask our best educated person regarding price, so we asked our men’s surf buyer at Surfside Sports (Nick Skawinski)
Surfside Sports: “Nick, what up? We need some of your valuable input regarding Matuse Wetsuits, and the prices they are going for. Is it worth shelling out the extra money for these suits?”
Nick Skawinski: “Ya, for sure I think so, definitely. The value of paying a few extra bucks, and getting the longevity, warmth, and durability, is worth it’s weight in gold. Matuse’s Geoprene Technology is pretty sick, as it does not absorb water, and your body heat is reflected inwards, meaning you keep your warmth! We have had really good success with the suits so far, and our team guys are super stoked on them”
It seems all across the board, Matuse Wetsuits has covered the most important aspects of making good wetsuits.
Matuse Wetsuits are warm, they dry fast, they are super comfortable and flexible, they have good wetsuit life, they are a bit more expensive, but that expense is thought to be well worth the extra money.
Surfside Sports would like to thank all our guys who contributed to The Matuse Wetsuits Product Review, and we hope this helps anyone looking for a new wetsuit, who may not have any knowledge about Matuse Wetsuits.

Technical Terminology
(Because any knowledge is good knowledge)
Two people speaking different languages can have a tough time communicating. This being said, designing and building Matuse premium (ichiban) game from Geoprene limestone rubber involves a distinctive and extensive language.
For example, there’s a wide range of terms that describe structure: Terms such as fibers and fabrics, rubbers and glues, seams and stitching. Another set of language explains performance: For example, flexibility, resiliency and longevity.
Though you don’t need to speak fluent “Matuse–suit—jargon” to appreciate Matuse’s ichiban quality, having a rough familiarity of our technical terminology never hurts. We sort these terms into the following categories:
- BASIC TERMS
- COMFORT
- AESTHETIC
- DURABILITY
- FIBERS
- FABRICS
- WATER REPELLANT FABRICS
- MATUSE GEOPRENE (& the 411 on Yamamoto)
- CONSTRUCTION
So, without further adieu, here’s some “knowledge” about your Matuse suit and the various vernaculars that make up Matuse’s ichiban game:
Durability (e.g. Matuse suits age as one rather than having one component let you down when the rest of your game is in its prime): A textile’s ability to retain physical integrity for a reasonable period of time while also under conditions of mechanical stress. As a surfer, you want gear that lasts.
Comfort (e.g. a soft Tahitian breeze blowing through your silk pajamas): Loosely defined as freedom from pain. It’s a textile (or anything else for that matter) that lends the body freedom from pain and discomfort. Wetsuit comfort is critical—especially when you’d rather concentrate on the waves.
Maintenance (i.e. being responsible like): Keeping up the same state of cleanliness, size, physical integrity, color and functionality as when purchased—especially when over an extended period of time. Maintenance is obviously enhanced through proper fit, use, and/or care procedures (i.e. Hang it neatly. Treat it like you bought it. Don’t leave it in the sun, on your patio, under your truck, in your friend’s Jacuzzi, with your puppy—well, you get the picture).
Performance (a.k.a. straight up representing): Or the efficiency in which something fulfills its intended purpose. For real for real.
Structure (i.e. keeping things where they should be): Description of objects and their arrangement.

Geoprene Technology
WHY IS GEOPRENE BETTER?
- Matuse’s limestone Geoprene is 98% water impermeable.
- Petroleum-based neoprene is 65% water impermeable.
- Geoprene suits don’t absorb water like a sponge.
- It’s not marketing jargon. It’s Geoprene. And it’s all good.
MATUSE SUITS ARE WARMER, LIGHTER, DRY FASTER & LAST LONGER.
Again, these functional advantages are a reality because Geoprene is 98% water impermeable. Old fashioned neoprene suits are like a sponge. They soak-up water. They get heavy. And they drag you down (while making you shiver). Conversely, Geoprene absorbs little to no water. Coupled with Matuse’s patterning, a Matuse suit never feels or functions like a cold, clammy bag of bricks on your back.
Matuse products, also known as Premium (the ichiban) Game, represent the Japanese-based Kaizen philosophy of continual improvement. Measure twice. Cut once. Can’t knock this hustle. It’s art + function and it’s all good. In designing a suit, we seek to perfect 4 critical areas:
- FLEXIBILITY
- COMFORT
- INSULATION
- DURABILITY
To maximize performance in each area, we consult with a panel of orthopedists, yogis, world-renowned surfers, swimmers and water-enthusiasts to determine a seam design that is not only functionally superior but also comfy and aesthetically pleasing. It’s our job to ensure you maximize your time spent in the water. And we are constantly improving in the following areas:
- Complimenting the musculo-skeletal structure of the human body.
- Balancing the body’s natural symmetry within each suit or top.
- Minimizing resistance, reducing fatigue and increasing power.
- Anatomical adjustments to the knees, elbows, shoulders and neck.
- Maximizing breathing capacity while optimizing core heat retention.
Ultimately, it’s all about getting better. Everyday.
In the Fall of 2006, Matuse launched its first three products: The BC Vest, The Philo and the Chapter 1 Jackets (make each name a link to the product…and also include pic of three suits in frames from first shoot). Straight from the drawing board. Matuse didn’t even offer a full suit until the Fall of 2007.
Today, Matuse’s product (http://matuse.com/shop/) line has expanded but the mission statement will forever be: To make product ichiban (the best) by creating function-first, solution-specific innovations; to educate by telling a story, enhancing cultural and environmental awareness.
The Big Picture (store these to long-term memory)
MORE FLEXIBILITY.
Matuse’s ergonomic design and Geoprene technology create an unsurpassed combination of insulation and flexibility.
MORE PREMIUM PERFORMANCE.
More endurance: Energy is conserved since the body’s thermostatic line remains at a balanced level. This means longer and more fulfilling sessions.
MORE WARMTH; LESS WEIGHT.
Geoprene’s technology means thinner rubber can still be warmer rubber. Since it doesn’t absorb water, it weighs less. So it allows athletes to focus on the right issues (like better surfing), and fuss less over the wrong ones (like being cold, uncomfortable—and performing like a wet noodle).
MORE INCENTIVES (TO SURF), LESS EXCUSES NOT TO.
It gives you more reasons why and less reasons why not.
The Details (might want to take some notes)
GEOPRENE IS THE ICHIBAN
Old-fashioned neoprene is petroleum-based: It’s messy, it’s hazardous and it goops up sea otters. Geoprene is derived from limestone that’s 99.7% pure. Estimates show that the limestone source – an ancient misty Mesozoic mountain – has reserves that will last approximately 3,000 years. Compare that to the earth’s dwindling supply of oil (as well as the astronomically high price per barrel) and you have a pretty good idea as to why Geoprene is a more sustainable alternative (in addition to being functionally superior).
As mentioned above, how it performs according to its intended utility is paramount. On this note, the intended utility for wetsuit is to being flexible, comfortable, insulating and durable. Durability also equates to ecology. If you suit lasts longer, you hopefully won’t need to heap it onto the scrap heap 3-6 months of buying it.
Well, Geoprene gets an A+ for it’s ability to fulfill its intended utility. This is because of its unique independent closed microcell structure.
To break it down, on standard suits, if a cell is connected with another-and if a wall of the cell is broken, the performance of rubber becomes largely lowered. Geoprene has a perfectly independent cell (perfectly closed cell). In essence, every cell in your suit has “the other cells’ back.” Keeping things tight like that. This last point means that your suit will keep you warmer longer.
In any case, because of this unique independent closed micro-cell structure, Geoprene keeps you warmer, lighter and just as flexible. These are some of the reasons why Geoprene puts a beatdown on standard, kitchen-sponge-like neoprene.
THIS RUBBER DOESN’T SUCK
Unlike standard neoprene, Geoprene doesn’t suck up water. Its closed cell content is over 98%—over 30% higher than most competing materials. And with virtually no water absorption, the weight of this rubber remains nearly identical in wet or dry conditions.
THIS RUBBER HAS GAS—AND THAT’S A GOOD THING
Each independent closed cell is filled with Nitrogen gas, enabling excellent thermal insulation and optimum heat retention.
THIS RUBBER BACKS ITSELF UP
Geoprene’s uniform microcell structure ensures that if your suit’s surface gets scratched, new independent concave microcells are exposed to ensure continued functionality.
THIS RUBBER’S GOT MORE STRETCH THAN YOUR OWN SKIN
Geoprene’s maximum elongation is 480-530%. The human skin’s greatest elongation—found in the armpit—is only 60-70%. Even better, Geoprene never gets stretch marks.
THIS RUBBER’S GOT 3-DIS (I.E. 3-DIMENSIONAL INTELLIGENT SKIN)
Geoprene has a state-of-the-art technology that’s a part of its basic DNA. In addition to the “Regular Carbon Black” application, Geoprene has “Spherical Carbon Black”—which disperses all force loads: stretch, elongation, pressure and compression. Geoprene also has a “FE Polymer” which prevents self-curing and reduces aging (i.e. hardening) that affects inferior foam rubber compounds.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR GEOPRENE TIP-TOP
GET A MANICURE (OR AT LEAST CUT YOUR NAILS)
Don’t claw your ichiban game like a lion grabbing a zebra. Instead, remove the suit with your fingertips.
BE GENTLE, SENSITIVE AND RESPONSIBLE LIKE
Hang it neatly. Treat it like you bought it. Don’t leave it in the sun, on your patio, under your truck, in your friend’s Jacuzzi, with your puppy—well, you get the picture.
BE BETTER THAN A BARNEY (EVEN IF YOU ARE ONE)
If you don’t know, check with someone. There’s no stupid questions—only unfortunate outcomes.
Matuse Product Warranty
We offer a 1 year limited warranty from the date of purchase on manufacturing defects for all Matuse Geoprene Wetsuits for the original owner with proof of purchase.
The warranty does not cover Geoprene damaged from use other than normal recreational use. Warranty does not cover, and is not limited to, damage/cracking due to sun exposure, improper care, fin cuts, finger nail nicks, shark attack, spontaneous combustion, alien abduction, general negligence or natural aging over the course of the product’s lifetime.
Accordingly, if the Geoprene is in such a state that it cannot be used for repair or was repaired by an unauthorized repair service, the warranty will be voided. This warranty is ultimately limited to repair or replacement at the discretion of Matuse and does not include consequential damages, incidental damages or damages to person or property.
HOW TO GET YOUR SUIT REPAIRED
- Product Warranty Form must be included
- Copy of purchase receipt
- Suit must be clean and dry
You must print out and completely fill out the Product Warranty Form. Download the proper form below and send it in with your wetsuit. Be sure to include a copy of your purchase receipt. Any suits sent in without the Product Warranty Form or Product Receipt will not be processed until both are received. If suit is sent in wet and dirty a $15 dry and clean fee will be billed to the customer. Be sure to pack the suit loosely in a box. Over folding can cause crease damage to the wetsuit.
